Symbiotica

Symbiotica — A collaborative exhibition of poetry and visual art.

Thursday from 6:00pm – 8:00pm at the Daffodil Gallery

Philip Jagger and I will have a piece on display that we collaborated on over the last month or so. There are a bunch of other collaborations there as well — should be fascinating! Hope to see you there!

And, completely unrelated to Symbiotica, here’s a shot from Vancouver Island last fall.

Jewelry, Gifts, and Galleries

photo-pendant-jewelry

Have you bought all your Christmas gifts yet? A lot of people I’ve talked with know about my photography but not a lot of people know I make jewelry. And I haven’t mentioned it very much here. I have pendants, earrings, cufflinks and tie clips available (as well as prints) at Tix On The Square (right in Churchill Square) and Daffodil Gallery (on 124 Street and 104 Ave). Both are great places to browse with lots of art and friendly people to chat with.

Also, I’ve been doing some updating in my online gallery (which has been neglected for a while). I’m increasing the size of the galleries so you can get a better idea of the range of my work. So far I’m done Surroundings which is probably my most standard landscape type stuff, Altered which is full of things people have made and ways we’ve changed our world, and finally Rooted which is full of trees and plants. If you’ve looked through my galleries before much of it will be familiar, but I think all of you will find a few you haven’t seen before. Enjoy!

On Thursday, December 15th, I’ll be at the Daffodil Gallery for a few hours in the middle of the day. I may bring some small prints with me to augment the lovely gallery wraps and pendants they already have there. This is part of their 12 days of Christmas where artists will be in attendance.

Edit 1:
Camrose is done and was a great success! Thanks to everyone who came out. I hope you all enjoy your prints and pendants!

A Bloomin’ Gallery Show

The Daffodil Gallery

This Saturday, August 13 from noon to 4pm is the opening for “Blooming“, a new show at the Daffodil Gallery. I’ve got two pieces in this show — one you’ve seen before if you’ve been to the gallery, and the other is new for this show. Unfortunately, I’m not going to be there for the opening, but even without me the gallery is a relaxing and enjoyable place to go and see new art.

Kasaa Gallery

Also coming up soon is the VAAA Open Photo Exhibition. The opening will be Thursday, August 25th from 6 to 8pm at the Kasaa Gallery in the Northern Jubilee Auditorium. I am excited to have two pieces in this show, which is a juried show open to all Alberta photographers. There should be quite a variety of photo styles there.

I may have to get a calendar up on the site to keep track of exhibitions and shows for those interested.

But where are all the photos from BC?

I’m getting there slowly. Everything else is pretty crazy right now, so they’ll start trickling out over the next week or two. To get started, here are some cracked rocks in Medicine Lake in Jasper National Park. This was taken after my first day on the road, which is always a very liberating experience.

Cute Bear with Messages

This little grizzly cub wants to let you know that this is the last week to see my photos at Elm Cafe on 117th Street just north of Jasper. It is also the last week for my current show at Daffodil Gallery on 124th Street and 104 Ave. If you miss them, don’t despair — there are more shows in the works.

Photos at Elm Cafe (and other news)

If you go to the Elm Cafe (on 117 Street just north of Jasper Ave) in the next couple weeks, you’ll be able to enjoy a few of my photos! And you’ll get to enjoy their awesome coffee!

And, as always, you can see my art at The Daffodil Gallery (on 124 Street at 104 Ave).

After a great camping trip in the mountains, I’m back with lots of photos to share. Turns out that with the heavy snowfall this year, we were a couple weeks too early to do a bunch of the hikes we wanted to, but it was a great trip anyway. Apparently I’m starting to become a bit of a birder, but I’m not quite sure how that mixes with my photography yet. I really enjoy being aware of what’s going on around me and knowing what all the sounds are — it makes me feel just a little more connected and less like an outsider when I’m “alone” in the woods. Maybe one of these days, if people are interested, I’ll post some of my bird photos that I took mostly for identification (being a photographer and not a real birder, I have a fairly long lens, but no binoculars). But for now I’ll be posting photos I’m happy with for their aesthetic qualities.

Joel Koop at The Daffodil Gallery

I am extremely happy to announce I will be showing my artwork at The Daffodil Gallery, soon opening downtown at 10412 124st NW. The Grand Opening will be on Friday, May 13, but the doors will be open sooner than that. I will post updates as I get them.

This is just a teaser of some of the photos I’ll be displaying – to see them in all their glory you’ll have to go check it out. I am also impressed with the caliber of artwork The Daffodil is gathering. It will be well worth your time to stop by!
